Members of Writers’ Block visit ‘Close’ exhibition.

Pupils within the Writing Society visited the exhibition of Rosie Phillip’s work as inspiration for their creative writing. We wanted to share some of their work alongside the pieces on display by Artist Rosie Phillips.

The Fabulous Fredringson the Fifth
“And now for our final act!”
I was sweating so hard I feared I would drown. I’d been waiting hours for my act.
“The one... the only!”
My act could kill me with one wrong move.
“The balancing rings of light!”
I had to balance disks the size of me on one foot, while sitting on a chair on my back.
“Please welcome... Fredringson the 5th!”
Here goes...

Animals of The Close

Animals,
They make a place, don’t they?
The grumpy cat
The friendly cat
The bold cat
(who we’ll get to later)
But it’s not all about the cats.
There’s always a fat dog
A playful dog
A naughty dog.

 I have fond memories:
Of Close cat-watching club
(A Lower Four Endeavour.)
Taking my own dog for a stroll on the grass after a club.
Budge’s legendary appearance at the most inconvenient of times.
The peregrine falcons’ cries overhead and their half-finishes meals also demand a memory, of course.

A place without animals must be a very dull place indeed.
So take time to enjoy the architecture, talk to the people…
And most importantly, notice the animals of the Close.

The dog just lay there, its fluffy little paws stretched out in front of it; it’s cute little eyes twinkling at me. I sighed as I closed my notebook on the picture of Jessie. She was back home, and I was here: on the front lines, risking my backside for “king and country.” Stupid Saying. My “king and country” were thousands of miles away, sitting around on plush little cushions with frills on the sides, while we were here, living the hell of war!

Oh. Sorry. I forgot to say who “we” are…

Well, “we” is the entirety of fit and able people in, well, the world. See, what happened goes something like this…

One of our Mars Rovers dug too deeply into Mars and found advanced life. That life thought we declared war, and sent horde after horde of alien monstrosities to attack Earth.

After fifty years, almost 1.2 billion humans have been killed. Half of earth was lost.

But then, us being humans, we discovered how to (sorry, this is kind of gross) tear the aliens apart from the inside out, using the AKOA (Absolute Killer of Aliens.) Yeah, pleasant, right? No, of course not…
