Nigel Orme — VIEWFINDER

An exhibition of landscape paintings by Nigel Orme

Wednesday 27 September – Friday 6 October 2023

Exhibition open 10.30 am – 4pm daily. Closed Sunday 1 October.

I paint landscapes in acrylic on canvas. I take regular walks and find endless fascination in the changing of the light across the countryside. When I work, I try to capture the atmosphere of the place I’m in. I want to draw the viewer into a painting and often paint paths disappearing into woodland or spaces hidden in shadow.

Isle of Wight 1.

Glimpse

I’m particularly interested in colour and contrast where borders meet; the dark shadow of a hawthorn hedge alongside the sharp acid yellow of a field of rapeseed, or a pile of cloud dropping behind a line of silhouetted trees.

Ringroad

I’m less interested in detail and more interested in the feel of the space I’m looking at; the sweep of a shadow, a slab of colour, or the wedges of sky in between tree branches.

I’m not a purist about technique. I make marks – dots, splashes, smears – that say something of how I feel about the view in front of me. I work with large brushes to try to capture the spirit of my subject.

VIEWFINDER is a celebration of my relationship with nature.
